Dental crowns are one of the best ways to repair teeth that are in bad shape and replace ones that are completely missing. They are strong, reliable and most importantly, effective when it comes to treating dental problems. With all of the different dental problems, it can be confusing to know which procedures are used for what. This article outlines when dental crowns are needed and for whom.

When are dental crowns needed?

Outlined below are a few scenarios in which a person may need a dental crown. Read on to learn more!

Teeth that are cracked or chipped

A lot of patients, both children and adults experience a chip or crack in their natural tooth. Children often have accidents that result in a chipped tooth and adults are prone to cracking, as they age. When either a chip or crack occurs, patients are likely to need a dental crown to restore the tooth. Dental crowns will be used to cover the crack or chip to ensure that the tooth remains healthy and strong.

Decayed teeth

Oftentimes, cavities can be treated through the use of a dental crown. Children are extremely prone to cavities because they tend to consume a lot of sugar and their oral hygiene is not always the best. On the flip side, adults are also known to experience cavities. Excessive sugar consumption from sodas or alcohol can cause the teeth to decay over time. With the help of a dental crown, both children and adults can restore a tooth that has decayed.

When dental crowns are used for cavities, the process is a bit more involved than when treating a chip or crack. The dentist will have to remove any decayed areas of the natural tooth prior to placing the dental crown. Oftentimes, there is some discomfort that comes with this part of the procedure. However, numbing agents and pain management tools can be utilized for both children and adults.

Replacing missing teeth

If oral hygiene goes neglected for too long, there is a chance that the teeth will fall out or decay to the point of deterioration. This typically only happens in adult patients because it takes years of neglect in order for the teeth to actually fall out or deteriorate. In some rare instances, a child may require a full replacement.

When there is a need to replace missing teeth, dental crowns can come in handy. They can work in conjunction with dental implants or bridges to completely replace a missing tooth. Once the implant or bridge is placed, the dentist can go in and finish the restoration by attaching a dental crown.
