If you don’t want to wait weeks to get a new crown placed, CEREC® might be for you. This can easily replace a tooth that is being difficult and can even be done on the same day, saving you time and inconvenience. Compared to a natural crown, which can take time to be completed, this type of crown can be done immediately and works just as well. With any new dental work, it’s important to be educated about what the process looks like and if this is a good fit for you.
What is CEREC?
CEREC stands for Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics. This is a specific material made for a crown placed on top of a damaged tooth. Other materials crowns are typically made from metal, resin, or porcelain. If your teeth are damaged due to decay, disease, injury, or medical conditions, you may need a crown. Certain medications can also make teeth brittle, or if you have heart issues, you may need antibiotics before surgery.
These same-day crowns are special because they are made and designed using computer design technology. The impressions are made with this technology and then fabricated. While this material is often used for crowns, it can also be used for other implants, dentures, or veneers. The process usually involves three steps:
- Your dentist will numb and prepare your mouth for restoration and get an impression or scan of your mouth.
- The CAD (computer-aided design) or CAM (computer-aided manufacturing) software will be used to make a custom model for your needs. This step is quick and can take as little as fifteen minutes.
- The design is created with equipment that can follow the model required.
After the model is made, it can be placed in your mouth comfortably.
Benefits
There are many benefits to getting this type of crown. One of them is the natural-looking appearance of the finished products. Most of the time, if not all the time, people will not notice it since it lacks a metal core and therefore looks like your usual smile. This type of restoration is also very strong, resisting abrasion and thus lasting longer. Since it can also be done on the same day, you don’t need to wait longer to get your dental work completed, saving you plenty of time.
Getting CEREC saves you money since you will not be going back and forth to appointments over several months. It is also highly accurate and allows your dentist to have more control, offering you more comfort. While this is a very convenient option, it may not work for all.
Things like cost and insurance coverage can certainly impact one’s decision. If this is something, you’d be interested in, talk with your dentist about the process and if it is a good choice for you.
