How Invisalign® Can Correct Overcrowded Teeth

Invisalign® has become a popular option for people who want to straighten their teeth discreetly and comfortably. Continue reading to learn about Invisalign® and whether it can fix overcrowding. Overcrowded teeth can make people feel self-conscious about their smiles. Patients may smile more confidently after undergoing Invisalign® treatment to correct overcrowded teeth.

When teeth overlap or are misaligned, it may be difficult for patients to maintain proper dental hygiene practices like brushing and flossing. Since conventional toothbrushes and floss may have difficulty reaching every tooth surface, teeth that are packed too closely together may become a breeding ground for bacteria that contribute to gum disease. If left untreated, gum disease may lead to cavities and even tooth loss.

How can Invisalign® help with overcrowded teeth?

The Invisalign method helps to realign the patient's teeth systematically. This treatment not only straightens the teeth but also improves oral health and corrects bite alignment.

The dentist will meet with the patient to discuss their dental alignment before and after the treatment. A unique aligner tray is made for each patient to wear that softly nudges the teeth into a straighter position over time. To ensure the teeth keep progressing into the proper alignment, the trays are replaced at intervals, usually two weeks. Patients will also have to wear the aligner trays for at least 22 hours every day, taking them out only when eating or brushing. Depending on how crowded the patient's teeth are, the whole process may take several months to complete.

In cases of severe overcrowding and misalignment

A patient's teeth may be severely out of line or crowded in some cases. Therefore, a dentist may advise the use of Invisalign attachments. The attachments are glued to the patient's teeth, although the standard tooth aligner tray is intended to be completely detachable for eating and cleaning. The attachments serve as anchors for the alignment tray, providing an additional push to correct highly crowded teeth. These attachments are made of material that matches the color of the patient's teeth so that it is less noticeable.

The duration of treatment for correcting overcrowded teeth with Invisalign

The severity of the problem determines the length of time it takes Invisalign to address overcrowding. Patients will have to wait approximately four weeks for the trays to be made once the dental imprints have been taken. After that, patients will wear a set for approximately two weeks. The total number of trays made and the severity of the misalignment determine the duration of treatment. While some individuals may only need to wear the trays consecutively for two to three months, others may require treatment for 12 to 18 months.
