How an Orthodontist Can Help You With Your Bite

Wondering if you should make an appointment with an orthodontist to address your bite problems? An improper bite needs to be corrected and as soon as possible. The longer you wait to seek treatment, the higher the possibility of you being diagnosed with additional problems in your mouth. These additional oral problems will add more time to your treatment plan, as it is always easier to address bite problems in their earliest stages.

If you are ready to have your bite problems fixed so that you no longer have to suffer, visit an orthodontic office.

About orthodontists

An orthodontist is a dental professional who is specifically trained in diagnosing, preventing and correcting structural problems in teeth. Malocclusions, also known as a bad bite, are commonly treated by orthodontists and refers to a misalignment in the way the teeth come together when the mouth is closed. When the teeth are not in their proper alignment, it is only a matter of time before someone begins experiencing bite problems, which means that their teeth are not able to perform their necessary vital functions.

About malocclusion

There are a few different types of malocclusion – crowded teeth, crossbite, overbite, underbite and an open bite. It is possible for someone to have more than one type of bite problem. There are many things that can cause someone to have a bad bite, including inheriting the condition.

Other common causes that can change the shape and/or the structure of the jaw that lead to malocclusion include being diagnosed with a cleft lip or cleft palate, being diagnosed with mouth or jaw tumors, teeth that are abnormal in shape, teeth that are impacted, chronic thumb sucking during early childhood years, undergoing an injury that misaligned the jaw, breathing through the mouth and not properly taking care of one’s oral health.

How are bad bites treated?

An orthodontist will first need to determine the type of bad bite someone has, as well as the severity. Once this is determined, they will make the necessary recommendations for correcting the problem. Some of the more common options an orthodontist will recommend for treating a bad bite include using braces to correct the position of the teeth, reshaping the teeth, bonding the teeth, capping the teeth and removing any teeth in the case of overcrowding. Less common options include utilizing wires or plates in order to stabilize the jawbone and requiring the patient to undergo surgery in order to reshape or shorten their jawbone.
