Dental Restoration Options for Damaged Teeth

Dental Restorations Rockville, MD

Dental restorations are dental treatments that restore tooth damage and missing teeth. Treatment restores the look, feel and function of the patient’s teeth. Many dentists recommend dental restoration for chipped, cracked, broken and missing teeth.

Common dental restoration procedures

There are several different treatment options that patients have available to fix damaged teeth. Common types of dental restoration procedures are dental fillings, dental crowns and dental veneers. If teeth are beyond repair or missing, tooth replacement may be the most ideal solution.

Dental fillings

Dental fillings, which is the most common type of direct dental restoration, use a tooth-colored material (typically either amalgam or composite resin) to repair tooth decay and other forms of teeth damage. Dental fillings work well for minor instances of tooth damage, and they can last for around a decade with proper care. They are also an affordable option for dental restoration, and the filling procedure is minimally invasive and safe. Dental fillings can be applied to every tooth inside the mouth.

Dental crowns

Dental crowns are cap-like dental restorations that cover a damaged tooth and protect it from further harm. Dentists often recommend them if the damage is more severe, rather than only pertaining to a small section of the tooth. There are different material options for dental crowns, including porcelain-fused-to-metal, ceramic, metal-alloy and gold. Since they are strong and durable, they often work better for premolars and molars, which are used more for chewing purposes. Dental molars can fix most types of teeth damage, including chips, cracks and worn-down teeth from teeth grinding.

Dental veneers

Dental veneers are thin layers of porcelain material. They are often referred to as “Hollywood teeth” due to their prevalence among many in the entertainment industry and the cosmetic benefits that they offer. Dentists most often recommend dental veneers to patients who have damage to their front teeth. This is because they closely resemble the shade of natural teeth and can blend in well with the more visible teeth in the mouth. The porcelain veneers are bonded to the visible surface of teeth and are less durable than a metal-alloy or porcelain-fused-to-metal dental crown, although they work well for repairing and protecting front teeth.

Teeth replacement

Most dentists will try and save a damaged tooth whenever possible. However, for very loose, severely damaged and missing teeth, replacing the tooth is often the best option. If necessary, the dentist may recommend a dental implant, dental bridge or a partial denture to replace the damaged tooth. The dentist can explain the pros and cons of each option and help the patient make the most informed decision possible about the best dental restoration for tooth replacement.
