CEREC Crowns on Dental Implants

You may have heard about CEREC crowns and implants, but are you ready to consider the treatment? If you have cracked or broken teeth, this can be an effective solution. Traditional crowns have been a common choice for years, but this alternative method could get you the help you need even more quickly. Your dentist can offer these crowns not only for natural teeth but for implants as well. There are some benefits to going with this option over others you may be familiar with.

Who needs a crown?

Oral problems can affect people of all ages. There is a variety of issues that people face. Some of these include cavities, chipped teeth or missing teeth. Dentists use crowns to strengthen teeth that have fractures or severe chips. Crowns can also help when a person has a significant cavity that a filling cannot adequately repair. A crown is often used on a tooth after a dentist performs a root canal to clean out an infection.

The process

Dentists often take two or three appointments to put traditional crowns on a patient’s tooth. The first appointment will include a consultation and evaluation of the patient’s mouth. The dentist will take X-rays and will examine the damaged tooth. This will allow the dentist to make a mold, which a lab will use to construct the crown. At another appointment, the dentist will numb the patient, shave down the affected tooth and then put the crown on. A follow-up appointment may be necessary to make any adjustments.

The CEREC advantage

Many patients do not enjoy the time it takes to complete getting a crown. With this alternative process, there is no need for a lab or for the days or weeks of waiting. When using this method, the dentist will take digital pictures of the person’s mouth. The pictures then go to a machine that will mill the crowns in the office. This usually takes 15 minutes or less, so the entire crowning procedure can occur in one appointment.

Not just for natural teeth

Patients who have implants can also benefit from CEREC crowns. Though implants are durable, they are not immune to breaking or chipping. The dentist will follow the same process for implants as with natural teeth. It is helpful to know that the dentist will match the color shade of the crown with the implant and with surrounding natural teeth or implants. Another benefit of using these crowns and the technology is that the dentist can create an accurate fit. Also, the crowns will help the patient continue to bite normally.

Time for something different

If you have gotten crowns in the past, you may have disliked the amount of time it took to complete the process. Ask your dentist about CEREC crowns to restore your damaged teeth. Whether you have a problem with a natural tooth or with an implant, this process can be faster and more enjoyable. Make an appointment at the dentist office today.
